Blood Information System for Crisis Intervention and Management

How can digital solutions contribute to assuring a sufficient amount of safe and quality-assured blood and blood products for South Africa’s population before, during and after a crisis?

This is the question we aim to answer in our research project “Bloood Information System for Crisis Intervention and Management (BISKIT)”. For this purpose, we comprehensively model the South African blood supply chain, analyze its vulnerability to different crises scenarios, and assess the current state of information system usage in South African blood establishments. Based on the requirement specifications resulting therefrom, and the results from simulation analyses, we will finally develop a demonstrator for an information system including a user interface, write-up crisis management plans, and provide capacity building trainings regarding the use of the information system. By applying a comprehensive and participatory approach with stakeholders important for both the South African blood transfusion as well as crisis management systems, we aim to contribute to the assurance of business continuity of the South African blood supply chain in day-to-day operations as well as in crisis situations.
